About the Kunas

The Kunas

The Kunas are an indigenous people group found in northeast Panama. They occupy a strip of land called the San Blas Islands. Some Kuna live on the islands while others live in the mountainous mainland. They are known for their seclusion, fishing, farming and art work. They have been intentional about
preserving their culture, language, and way of life.

Due to their seclusion they face daily issues of starvation, medical attention and education. Thankfully due to the work of past missionaries, many of the villages have access to the Gospel. Pastor Venancio Perez is the missionary pastor of Aligandi. He travels between the villages to teach local pastors, equip their churches and to facilitate outside mission groups to help meet local needs.

Overall, the Kuna are a kind, creative, hardworking people; not to mention, they are competitive! They love to play soccer, basketball and volleyball! Join with us in prayer for the Kuna.

The Pineapple

Traditionally the pineapple has been a symbol of hospitality and blessing. The Kuna are known for their sweet, sweet pineapple. They are proud of their pineapple and are happy to cut it straight from the plant to share with any stranger. Although most Kunas live on the islands now, they transport by their hand carved canoe to the mainlands where their farms are. It is quite the journey, but it is the only hope in farming fresh foods for consumption and commerce. It is a big part of their livelihood.

Our invitation

The Kuna Agriculture Foundation has a standing invitation by the Kuna people due to the contribution of medical missionary Dr. Daniel I. Gruver and his wife Jane. They gave countless years of medical and spiritual service to the San Blas islands. Today the church stands strong. Although Dr. Daniel I. Gruver has since past and is the only person to ever have been laid to rest on an island, the Kuna Agriculture Foundation was established in his memory and honor by his family. They continue the legacy of Dr. Daniel I. Gruver today.
